When Florida was 7, she was molested by a family member, in her early 20’s she was date raped, and in her first marriage she experienced both sexual assault and domestic violence by her ex-husband. She never sought out any type of help or treatment for any of the trauma she endured.

After a traumatic car accident on Labor Day 2015, it unleashed a pandora’s box of PTSD causing all the suppressed memories and unresolved trauma to resurface. She finally began therapy and self-education on how the unresolved trauma changed the trajectory of her life. It is her deepest desire to help other victims and survivors, to address the trauma, pain and low-self-esteem.

Shining Light in Darkness was birthed. Inspired by her deep connection and love for helping people, Florida founded Shining Light in Darkness in 2014 to help sexual assault and domestic violence victims and survivors heal and reclaim a sense of joy in their lives. Today, Shining Light in Darkness is paving the way with a mission to provide holistic healing to meet the primarily needs of the underserved victims and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Shining Light in Darkness is a community of caring and compassionate people who wants to see a world free from sexual assault and domestic violence. Shining Light in Darkness carries out its mission through its integrated program portfolio of holistic healing, education, and advocacy. Our work is paving the way for innovative approaches to treating trauma, igniting shifts in the way the public views and responds to sexual assault, domestic violence, and teen dating.
